These Subaru STI Concepts are Being Unveiled in Tokyo

Subaru are set to unveil two new STI concepts at the upcoming Japan Mobility Show, taking place from October 31st to November 9th in Tokyo (with press days on the 29th and 30th of October). 

While full details remain scarce, the concept models will be called the Performance-E STI and the Performance-B STI.

The Performance-E STI is a battery-electric concept, and while Subaru hasn’t revealed specifics, the brand emphasised its space, practicality, aerodynamics, and its “exhilarating” driving experience, as well as a design that “evokes the brand's heritage,” as key attributes in a media release. 

Subaru hasn’t ditched internal combustion power, though, as the Performance-B STI features a boxer engine as a “base”, which could hint at some sort of hybridised powertrain. 

Like its electric stablemate, Subaru hasn’t revealed much, but the Performance-B will be equipped with the brand’s signature symmetrical all-wheel drive system. 

Teaser images of the new concept have been revealed by the brand.

A close-up of the Performance-E’s left front corner reveals a sleek headlight design, an STI badge, and gold wheels, continuing a long-running Subaru tradition. 

The Performance-B’s teaser image showcases a strikingly similar front-end design to that of the current-generation WRX. 

Another image previewing Subaru’s stand at the show, reveals the silhouettes of the two concepts, with the Performance-B sporting what could be a hatchback design with a roof-mounted wing, while the Performance-E seems to be more of a liftback. 

The new concepts aren’t the only cars Subaru will be featuring at the show. 

Three prototype vehicles are also set to make an appearance, with the E-Outback prototype – also badged as the Trailseeker in the North American market – as well as the off-road focused Forester Wilderness and Outback Wilderness prototypes taking to the stand. 

Joining them will also be the 1983 Subaru GL Family Huckster, driven by Travis Pastrana in Hoonigan’s Gymkhana 2022 video. 

Further details on the new concepts are expected at Subaru’s press conference taking place on October 29th, which will be livestreamed on YouTube.
