If you remember when Nirvana was a band and not just a t-shirt, then chances are you remember a time when you could choose from a handful of city-sized hatchbacks and sedans for less than $20,000.

Those days are almost behind us – but not quite – with the 2024 MG 3 Core currently being offered for $19,990 drive-away as part of a limited-time deal.

The run-out MG 3 comes with an 8.0-inch infotainment screen with wired Apple CarPlay, a rear-view camera, parking sensors, cruise control, six airbags, and 15-inch alloy wheels.

Power comes from a 1.5-litre non-turbo four-cylinder engine making 82kW and 150Nm, driving the front wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission – with a claimed fuel consumption rate of 6.7 litres per 100 kilometres combined.

The car maker says it expects to sell the remaining stock of the outgoing 2024 MG 3 by February 2025.

However, those interested in the latest 2025 MG 3 Excite can buy one for $22,990 drive-away, as part of a limited-time offer.

The newer model features a 10.25-inch infotainment screen with wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster, a reverse camera, electric fold side mirrors, six airbags, and a six-speaker stereo.

It also comes with MG Pilot – the company’s safety suite – which includes intelligent speed-limit assist, autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, radar cruise control, lane-change assist, rear cross-traffic alert, forward collision warning, and blind-spot detection.

Curiously, despite using the same engine as the outgoing model, the new MG 3 makes slightly less power, with 81kW and 142Nm being sent to the front wheels through a CVT automatic transmission. Fuel consumption is better, with the newer hatchback using a claimed 6.0L/100km combined.

As with all models, buyers of either MG 3 also get the company’s 10-year/250,000km factory warranty.
