It’s impossible to overstate the importance of the new BMW iX3, the first vehicle built off the $18bn Neue Klasse platform, the biggest investment in the company’s history.
Only a single variant will be available at launch, the iX3 50 xDrive, priced from $109,000 plus on-road costs, though there are some options to deal with which we’ll cover in a moment.

Expect the range to fill out both upwards and downwards, with the possibility of a sub-Luxury Car Tax threshold ($91,387) entry point, but initially the 50 xDrive will be the only option.
It uses a pair of electric motors (one front; one rear) that produce 345kW/645Nm for a 0-100km/h sprint of 4.9sec. Getting the same performance from the internal combustion X3 requires the $130,600 (+ORCs) M50.

The motors are fed by a 108kWh battery pack that provides up to 805km of range, while the new 800-volt architecture supports up to 400kW DC charging for a 10-80 per cent fill-up in 21 minutes. At the maximum AC charge rate of 22kW a 0-100 per cent fill needs 5.5 hours.
Standard equipment levels are healthy, with the M Sport package, 20-inch wheels, 3D head-up display, Harman Kardon stereo, panoramic glass sunroof, heated front seats and steering wheel, power tailgate and the 43.3-inch BMW Panoramic Vision screen that stretches from A-pillar to A-pillar.

A full equipment list can be found at the bottom of this article.
White is the only standard colour, with all metallics being an additional $2000 and the Frozen Space Silver $6000, while six alloy wheel designs ranging from 20 to 22 inches are available ranging from no-cost options to $7700.
The $3500 M Sport Package Pro includes red M Sport brake calipers, M seat belts and steering wheel, M sport front seats and a glass kidney grille, black high-gloss diffuser and black high-gloss mirror caps.

On the inside there is the choice of black, white or castanea (brown) Veganza or a black Veganza/Performtex combination, while black and grey leather options are offered for $4000. Finally, a tow hitch is $2500.
The BMW iX3 50 xDrive is expected to launch in Australia mid-year.
