The Toyota GR Supra Supercars race car has officially been revealed, ready to take on both the Supercars Championship and the Bathurst 1000 in the hands of Walkinshaw Andretti United and Brad Jones Racing.

The Supercars Supra will be powered by the 2UR-GSE 5.0-litre V8, which has previously been used in several Lexus models, including the RC F and LC 500, as well as the Toyota Hilux Dakar Rally car.

“Just like all the products that fall under our Gazoo Racing performance brand: GR Yaris, GR Corolla and GR 86, the GR Supra is made for motorsport and is no stranger to the race track,” said Sean Hanley, Vice President of National Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations at Toyota Australia.

The GR Supra will make its Supercars debut at the opening round of the 2026 Supercars championship, despite its road-car equivalent having already been discontinued in Australia with no plans in place for its future.

Instead, the Supra will act as a “halo” for the GR brand while surviving through its motorsport exploits, according to Hanley.

“Supra is retired,” said Hanley. “We knew this was on from day one, so I don’t want anyone to think this was an absolute surprise to us. It wasn’t. And we wanted to continue on regardless of that.”

While there are no plans for the road car in Australia, Hanley said the Supra is expected to be racing in Supercars for “the foreseeable five years” with its replacement on the grid dependent on Toyota’s future product lineup.

“Beyond [five years] it will depend on what we launch and what we’re bringing out in the market, and what we can do with the [Supercars] homologation team.”

Both factory-backed and privateer Toyotas have previously competed in the Australian Touring Car Championship – which later evolved into the modern Supercars Championship – and the Bathurst 1000, with the brand’s exploits including an eight-year streak of class victories at Mount Panorama between 1985 and 1992 with the Toyota Corolla.
