The current-generation Toyota GR Supra will be discontinued in Australia, with final orders set to close by the end of August.

The fifth-generation Supra broke cover in January 2019 at the North American International Auto Show, sporting styling elements from the FT-1 concept car that had been revealed at the same auto show five years earlier.

Its release marked the return of the legendary Supra nameplate after its predecessor was discontinued in 2002.

The GR Supra was jointly developed alongside the third-generation BMW Z4, sharing both a platform and the B58 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six engine, producing 285kW and 500Nm and paired with a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission in the case of the former.

The Toyota GR Supra took design inspiration from the FT-1 Concept

The GR Supra range currently consists of the GT, the GTS, and the Track Edition, introduced in Australia last month.

While the Track Edition serves as the GR Supra’s Australian swangsong, a GT4 race car-derived Final Edition – limited to 300 units – is also being offered in Japan and Europe, although this version won’t be sold here.

The GR Supra Track Edition released in Australia in July

Despite being discontinued in Australia, the Supra is still set to debut in the Australian Supercars championship next year.

More than 1,400 examples of the fifth-generation Toyota Supra have been sold in Australia since its local debut in September 2019.

The sixth-generation Supra is understood to be in Toyota's pipeline as CarSauce reported in May, with early reports suggesting that power will come from Mazda's 3.3-litre inline-six. However, plans for the new Supra are yet to be officially confirmed.
