The Cupra Terramar has been awarded a five-star ANCAP safety rating for all petrol and hybrid variants sold in Australia and New Zealand.

The rating applies to both front-wheel and all-wheel drive models and is based on assessments conducted under the 2023–2025 protocols.

The Terramar is a new mid-size SUV in the Cupra range, offered in Australia with a choice of turbo-petrol and mild-hybrid engines. A plug-in hybrid variant is due to arrive in 2026, with current pricing starting from $58,490 drive-away.

The vehicle scored 89% for Adult Occupant Protection and 87% for Child Occupant Protection. Maximum points were awarded for the driver in both the full-width frontal and side impact crash tests, while protection for the second-row adult passenger was rated marginal for the chest area.

Vulnerable Road User Protection was rated at 82%, with testing confirming good head and leg protection in pedestrian scenarios. However, protection of the pelvis was mixed, with areas of both good and weak results.

The Cupra Terramar's Safety Assist systems received a score of 78%, with good performance noted for its autonomous emergency braking (AEB) systems across car-to-car, pedestrian, and cyclist scenarios, including turning paths.

The system does not function in reverse, meaning AEB Backover functionality is not available.

Standard safety features on Australian-supplied vehicles include blind spot monitoring, cyclist dooring detection, and intelligent adaptive cruise control. These are not standard on all variants in New Zealand, where specification varies.

ANCAP also noted the absence of a top tether anchorage for the second-row centre seat in New Zealand models. As a result, that position is not suitable for installing child restraints.

According to ANCAP Chief Executive Officer Carla Hoorweg:

“The Cupra Terramar offers a well-rounded package of occupant protection and crash prevention.”

She added, “Those looking to purchase the Terramar in New Zealand should just be aware that there are slight differences in the safety specification of NZ models.”
