There are those who claim you can’t have everything, but the specs on the sixth-generation of Chery’s Super Hybrid drivetrain suggest otherwise.

Depending on the exact application, it has targets of 0-100km/h in 4.3sec, fuel consumption of 3.0L/100km and a total driving range of up to 2000km.

Chery continues to refine its Super Hybrid powertrain technology

On paper the new system – the fourth generation since 2021 – is very similar to Chery’s current Super Hybrid setup, which powers variants of the Tiggo 7, Tiggo 8 and Tiggo 9 in Australia, but all elements have undergone significant revisions.

As a plug-in hybrid powertrain, it utilises both a regular combustion engine and battery power. The 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol is claimed to have a thermal efficiency of 44.5 per cent, far exceeding the typical 25-30 per cent and approaching the 50 per cent of recent Formula 1 engines.

Chery claims extraordinary thermal efficiency from its latest 1.5-litre petrol engine

This is paired with a new electric motor that can spin up to 24,000rpm, fed by an 18.46kWh lithium iron-phosphate battery. Once again, this is similar in size to the current battery pack, but revisions have improved its energy density.

Two versions of the new Super Hybrid system are offered, the DHT160 developing 160kW/275Nm for vehicles between 1500-2000kg and DHT230 developing 260kW/330Nm for vehicles over 2000kg.

Chery's dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT) has two different power levels

Presumably, a further version with additional electric motor assistance will be available in due course, with the current Tiggo 9 using a trio of electric motors to produce 315kW/580Nm.

Super Hybrid prototypes have visited 41 countries for durability testing, including Australia for hot weather and rough road conditions.

Chery Tiggo 7 likely to receive the updated Super Hybrid system in the next 12-24 months

Chery has not yet confirmed which models will receive the sixth-generation Super Hybrid system, but it’s expected to roll out across its range over the next 12-24 months.
