Powertrain details for the 2026 Geely Starray EM-i plug-in hybrid mid-size SUV have been revealed ahead of its Australian launch early in Q4 of 2025.

The Starray EM-i – which was confirmed for an Australian release back in June – debuts Geely’s E-Motive Intelligence (EM-i) plug-in super hybrid technology.

Like many of the latest Super Hybrid offerings entering the market, the EM-i powertrain will reportedly not see a considerable performance reduction even if the Starray EM-i is not plugged in, compared to a more conventional plug-in hybrid system.

The 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol four-cylinder engine – developed by Geely and Renault’s joint venture, Horse Powertrain – produces 73kW and 125Nm.

This is paired with an electric motor – with electricity coming from an 18.4kWh Lithium-Iron Phosphate battery – making an additional 160kW and 262Nm, along with a dedicated hybrid transmission for a total system output of 193kW sent to the front wheels.

Geely claims a combined fuel consumption for the Starray EM-i of 2.4L/100km on the WLTP cycle, for a total driving range of 943km (WLTP) as well as 83km of electric-only range (WLTP).

The hybrid system can operate in three driving modes: “Pure”, “Hybrid” and “Power.”

“Pure” is the electric-only mode, recharging the battery through regenerative braking.

The Hybrid mode sees the electric motor and the engine work together to propel the vehicle, with both regenerative braking and the petrol engine working to recharge the battery.

“Power” mode sees the electric motor and the internal combustion engine work together to power the Starray EM-i without recharging the battery.

Two regen modes can also be selected: "Intelligent" – which prioritises fuel economy – and "Forced", prioritising charging speed.

While exact details on trim levels and pricing are yet to be officially confirmed, the Starray EM-i is expected to directly rival the likes of the MG HS and Chery Tiggo 7 Super Hybrid models as well as the BYD Sealion 6 upon its Australian release.
