Honda has confirmed that the new-generation Prelude will launch in Australia in mid-2026, marking the return of the iconic nameplate after a 24-year absence.

The announcement follows the vehicle’s recent showing at the 2025 Goodwood Festival of Speed, where it was displayed in left-hand drive form.

The sixth-generation Prelude will debut as a hybrid-only sports coupe, featuring an updated version of Honda’s e:HEV hybrid system. Honda Australia describes it as a “specialty sports” model that blends performance with everyday usability.

At Goodwood, the Prelude appeared in Boost Blue Pearl, featuring a long hood, connected LED headlights, a rear light bar, and flush door handles. Honda says the low and wide stance is intended to convey dynamic motion, with a body design described as “glider-like.”

Inside, the Prelude features a coordinated blue and white interior theme, with PRELUDE-embroidered headrests, a D-shaped steering wheel, and a driver-focused cockpit.

While it shares elements with the Civic, the Prelude introduces unique materials like ivory-toned surfaces and bespoke sports seating.

Built on a front-wheel-drive platform, the Prelude is expected to pair a four-cylinder engine with an electric motor, although technical specifications are yet to be confirmed. A manual transmission is not anticipated.

The vehicle’s packaging includes a tailgate-style rear opening, foldable rear seats, underfloor storage, and shopping bag hooks to enhance practicality.

The Prelude was originally produced across five generations from 1978 to 2001, introducing innovations such as the first electric sunroof in a Japanese car, ABS, and four-wheel steering. The upcoming model aims to continue that tradition with hybrid technology and modern design.
