Scoop! Toyota Tundra Platinum to Join Australian Line-Up

Competition in the large US pick-up segment is hotting up, with a Toyota Tundra Platinum caught testing on Australian roads.

Toyota appears to have brought out a Tundra Platinum i-Force Max pick-up for evaluation, with images posted to social media website Reddit showing the vehicle with light camouflage.

The Japanese car giant announced it was bringing a “top-of-the-range premium version” to join the Tundra Limited in September 2024, however the exact variant has – until now – remained unknown.

A spokesperson for Toyota Australia confirmed to CarSauce the Tundra Platinum was undergoing testing ahead of its addition to the line-up.

While the Tundra Limited has brushed aluminium on the bumper and grille surround, a horizontal slatted grille, chrome window trims, and 20-inch two-tone alloy wheels, the Tundra Platinum is distinguished by its gunmetal grey bumper and grille surround, a chain-link style grille, black window trims, and 20-inch alloy wheels in gunmetal grey.

Inside, the Platinum gets a genuine leather interior – rather than the Limited’s synthetic leather upholstery – as well as 10-way power-adjustable front seats, and a tilt-and-slide panoramic sunroof with power sunshade.

A head-up display can also be optioned in its native market.

Though powered by the same 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 hybrid petrol engine making 326kW and 790Nm, coupled with a 10-speed automatic transmission, the Tundra Platinum can be optioned in North America with adaptive load-levelling rear air suspension.

In the US, the Platinum is US$9580 more than the Limited – or AU$15,300 – however, this doesn’t take into account specification differences between US and Australian models.

The evaluation vehicle spotted in Australia has had its grille surround and badges taped over with camouflage, and appears to have been fitted with optional side steps.

The Toyota Tundra is manufactured in Texas in left-hand-drive, where it is imported from before being remanufactured as a right-hand-drive vehicle by Walkinshaw Automotive Group – the same company that converts the Ram 1500 – using parts borrowed from the 300 Series LandCruiser.

Toyota Australia initially offered the Tundra to hand-picked customers on a trial basis, before the vehicle went on sale to the wider public in November 2024.

According to data from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI), Toyota Australia sold 136 Tundra pick-ups in December 2024 – compared to 228 Chevrolet Silverado pick-ups, 334 Ford F-150s, and 227 Ram 1500s.

According to Toyota Australia, the Toyota Tundra Platinum is set to go on sale in the second quarter of 2025 (April to June inclusive), with local pricing and specifications to be announced closer to its launch.
