The Mercedes-AMG GLC 53 heralds the beginning of a new chapter for the brand with the return of larger engines into its smallest models.
Officially, the M139 2.0-litre four-cylinder, which has powered the C 43, GLC 43, C 63 and GLC 63 with varying levels of electrification, is being phased out due to stricter emissions regulations, but it’s no secret these models have failed to resonate with customers.

In addition to a new 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, which has made its debut in the facelifted S-Class, Mercedes is reintroducing six-cylinder engines into its ‘C’ models, starting with the GLC 53. A C 53 AMG is expected to follow shortly.
The 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder petrol engine has been heavily revised with a new cylinder head, intake, intake camshaft and intercooler and uses a turbocharger and auxiliary electric compressor to produce 330kW and 600Nm.

An overboost function can deliver 640Nm for up to 10 seconds at a time, while the electric compressor can deliver 7.5kW (up from 5kW) to improve throttle response.
This power is sent through a nine-speed automatic – using a wet-clutch arrangement instead of a torque converter – to all four wheels for a 0-100km/h sprint of 4.2sec. Top speed is limited to 250km/h, or 270km/h with the AMG Driver’s Package.

Three-stage adaptive dampers are standard, as is rear-wheel steering and large brakes, with 390mm discs and four-piston calipers at the front and 360mm discs with single-piston calipers at the rear.
The optional Dynamic Plus Package adds Race to the existing Slippery, Comfort, Sport and Sport+ drive modes, as well as an electronically controlled limited-slip rear diff, active engine mounts and red brake calipers.

AMG’s full variable all-wheel drive system is available in an SUV for the first time, which includes a Drift Mode to disable the front axle when the Dynamic Plus Package is optioned.
An Australian arrival for the Mercedes-AMG GLC 53 has not yet been confirmed, but it’s expected to arrive in Q4 2026.
