Hyundai Motor Company has unveiled the INSTEROID, a new concept vehicle based on the company's INSTER electric SUV, at an event in Seoul, South Korea. The concept introduces styling cues inspired by gaming culture, aimed at appealing to younger buyers.

INSTEROID is based on Hyundai’s existing INSTER electric urban SUV, also known as the Casper Electric in certain markets. The standard INSTER has been available internationally since last year in Korea.

Powering the Insteroid is Hyundai IONIQ 5 N running gear, adopting a shortened E-GMP platform based on the IONIQ 5 underpinnings.

Currently, the IONIQ 5 outputs 478kW of power and 770Nm of torque to all-four wheels. The battery of the IONIQ 5 is 84kWh, almost double that of the long-range Inster.

Hyundai’s European design team developed the INSTEROID concept, naming it by combining "INSTER" with "STEROID" to emphasise a performance-oriented design approach. The concept features sporty elements including an extended body, widened wheel tracks, aerodynamic enhancements such as a rear wing spoiler, diffuser, and wheel arch vents.

Inside, INSTEROID’s interior is designed with motorsport elements, featuring bucket seats, a roll cage, and adjustable instrumentation. Hyundai incorporated recycled materials into the cabin, notably using 3D knit fabrics made from recycled yarns.

Additional features of the concept include a Drift Mode driving setting, an integrated Beat House sound system, and a customisable Message Grid display. Hyundai demonstrated interactive digital experiences at the event, including a racing-themed online game related to the INSTEROID, scheduled for public release in April.

The INSTEROID concept debuted privately at Peaches D8NE in Seoul's Seongsu district. Hyundai confirmed the concept will be displayed publicly at the Seoul Mobility Show from April 3 to April 13, before heading to automotive events in Europe and other key markets.

Hyundai has confirmed the regular INSTER model (Casper Electric) is set to launch in Australia in the second quarter of 2025. It will be offered locally with two battery sizes: a 42kWh standard-range variant offering up to 327km of range, and a 49kWh long-range model providing up to 355km per charge.

Both Australian variants of the INSTER feature a front-mounted electric motor, with power outputs of 71kW for the standard-range and 84kW for the long-range model. At just 3.8 metres in length, the INSTER targets urban drivers, offering compact dimensions paired with features such as a 10.25-inch infotainment system and adjustable regenerative braking.
