The Geely EX2 electric hatch has received a five-star ANCAP safety rating in Australia, adding a key safety result to one of the country’s lowest-priced new EVs.

The rating applies to all Geely EX2 variants built from June 2026 and sold in Australia from July 2026, covering both the Complete and Inspire grades.

It also applies to New Zealand-market EX2 variants, which go on sale from September 2026.

Tested against ANCAP’s 2026-2028 criteria, the EX2 scored 79 per cent for Safe Driving, 72 per cent for Crash Avoidance, 86 per cent for Crash Protection and 95 per cent for Post Crash.

CarSauce has previously detailed the Geely EX2 pricing and specification line-up, which starts from $26,490 before on-road costs for the Complete grade and rises to $30,990 before on-road costs for the Inspire.

ANCAP Chief Executive Officer Carla Hoorweg said the EX2 delivered on core safety areas while also meeting electric vehicle post-crash requirements.

"The Geely EX2 has prioritised the fundamentals.
It offers a good level of crash protection and a broad suite of crash avoidance features.
And, as an electric vehicle, has proven its ability to appropriately isolate high-voltage battery power after a crash, and minimise risks from battery damage," Hoorweg said.

Alex Gu, Managing Director of Geely Auto Australia, said the five-star result was intended to support the EX2’s value-focused positioning.

"With the Geely EX2, we set out to bring a small car to market that does not compromise on safety, technology, design, space, and drivability.
Its five-star ANCAP rating is a fantastic result and provides a greater level of confidence to our customers that safety is a priority, regardless of vehicle shape or size," Gu said.

What ANCAP found

ANCAP said the EX2 provided generally good crash protection, including strong side impact performance and effective operation of the centre airbag between the front seats.

In the frontal offset test, ANCAP recorded good protection for the front passenger and child occupants, although an elevated risk of leg injury and pedal intrusion was noted for the driver.

A penalty was also applied after the seatbelt partially slipped from the shoulder of the 10-year-old child dummy in the rear seat.

The full-width frontal test produced generally good or adequate protection, although front passenger chest protection was rated marginal.

For vulnerable road users, ANCAP found pelvis and leg protection was generally good, while head protection was less effective across much of the bonnet surface.

The EX2 includes lower ISOFIX anchorages for the two rear outboard seats and top tether points for all rear seating positions, with all selected child restraints able to be fitted during ANCAP’s assessment.

ANCAP’s Crash Avoidance assessment produced a 72 per cent score, with autonomous emergency braking performing well in many vehicle, motorcycle, pedestrian and cyclist scenarios.

However, ANCAP noted the system’s capability was more limited at higher speeds, while low-speed collision avoidance performance was mixed.

The EX2 avoided collisions with crossing vehicles and motorcycles in low-speed testing, but did not intervene when turning across the path of another vehicle or motorcycle.

ANCAP also found the EX2 could not react to pedal misapplication and was unable to detect a stationary pedestrian when reversing.

Safe Driving performance was rated at 79 per cent, with the EX2 able to recognise incorrect driver seatbelt use and enhance restraints based on the stature of front-seat occupants.

The driver monitoring system performed well in detecting common forms of distraction, although ANCAP said its ability to detect fatigue or an unresponsive driver was less comprehensive.

During on-road testing, the EX2 correctly identified 65 per cent of speed change events, which ANCAP said was equivalent to 94 per cent of the distance driven.

Adaptive cruise control was rated well for detecting and responding to cars, motorcycles, pedestrians and cyclists, but it could not adapt when approaching road features such as roundabouts and intersections.

The EX2’s strongest category result was Post Crash, with a score of 95 per cent.

ANCAP said the EV demonstrated effective high-voltage battery isolation and post-crash fire risk management, while seatbelt buckles, door releases and the tailgate remained operable after assessed crash tests.

The EX2 is fitted with eCall hardware, but eCall notifications are not yet active.

Geely has committed to enabling eCall functionality in all EX2 vehicles by September 2027, a commitment ANCAP required for points to be scored in that area.

Geely says 459,960 EX2 vehicles and related global nameplate variations were delivered worldwide across A and B segments in 2025.

The ANCAP result gives the small electric hatch a five-star safety rating through to December 2034, subject to ANCAP’s rating applicability conditions.
