GWM has sold their 200,000th vehicle in Australia – a fossil grey Tank 300 – 16 years after the brand first landed on local soil.

Known as Great Wall Motors prior to its rebrand in 2020, the brand launched in Australia on the 24th of June 2009, becoming the first Chinese car manufacturer to enter the Australian market.

Great Wall debuted with a pair of utes, the V240 and the SA220, followed shortly afterwards by the X240 SUV.

In its first full calendar year in Australia, Great Wall sold 6,690 cars. While these figures were strong enough to place it 16th among Australia’s best-selling manufacturers, Great Wall held a market share of just 0.6 percent.

GWM have succeeded in Australia, particularly with their ute and SUV lineups

With its focus on value for money and by establishing its SUV and ute lineups, GWM gradually grew into one of the biggest players in the Australian market.

In 2024, GWM sold 42,782 cars, becoming Australia’s 10th best-selling manufacturer, with a market share of around 3.5 percent for the year.

With the arrival of the Haval H7, GWM now offers nine cars in Australia

As of July 2025, GWM ranks seventh in year-to-date sales figures, with the brand expecting only to strengthen its foothold in the Australian market, having also recently secured permanent residency at the Lang Lang Proving Ground.

“Our local success will only accelerate as we continue to invest here – demonstrated by the recent announcement of product localisation with Rob Trubiani and our residency at the Lang Lang Proving Ground.” said a GWM spokesperson.

GWM now sports a nine-strong local model lineup with the arrival of the Haval H7, joining its Haval SUV, Tank off-roader, Canon ute and battery electric Ora hatchback stablemates.
