The BYD Seal, slated for an early December release in Australia, is priced from $49,888 before on-road costs. This competitive pricing positions it $12,012 less than its primary competitor, the Tesla Model 3, which starts at $61,900 before on-road expenses.

Designed under the guidance of BYD global design director Wolfgang Egger, previously the head designer for the Audi Group, the Seal showcases an 'Ocean Aesthetic' design language.

This design gives it the appearance of a sports sedan, characterized by sculptured curves reminiscent of ocean waves.

Notably, the Seal boasts an impressive drag coefficient of just 0.219 Cd, making it one of the industry's most aerodynamically efficient vehicles.

The Seal isn't just about aesthetics; it's engineered for performance. It features a double wishbone suspension in the front and a multi-link setup in the rear. This works in tandem with BYD's chassis control system.

The DiSus Intelligent Body Control System, developed in-house by BYD, offers tailored damper settings for each of its four drive modes.

This ensures optimal control over both lateral and vertical movements and provides appropriate suspension compliance levels.

Additionally, the Seal incorporates the latest iTAC (Intelligence Torque Adaption Control) technology, BYD's take on torque vectoring, to maintain traction under heavy loads.

The driving range for the BYD Seal varies based on the model:

  • Standard Dynamic Range: 460km
  • Premium Extended Range: 570km
  • Performance AWD: 520km

BYD has incorporated its Blade batteries in the Seal, with a 61.4kWh unit in the Standard Dynamic Range and an 82.5kWh battery in the other models. The Seal supports charging at up to 150kW using DC power and offers Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability.

What are the Seal's dimensions?

Dimension-wise, the Seal measures 4800mm in length, 1875mm in width, and 1460mm in height, with a 2920mm wheelbase.

It offers 402L of boot space and an additional 53L under the bonnet.

The weights for the models are 1922kg for the Dynamic, 2055kg for the Premium, and 2185kg for the Performance.

What is the BYD Seal's Warranty?

BYD provides a six-year, 150,000km vehicle warranty and an eight-year, 160,000km battery warranty for the Seal.

Is the BYD Seal Safe?

While it hasn't been evaluated by ANCAP or Euro NCAP yet, the Seal comes equipped with a comprehensive suite of safety features:

  • Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) - Front and Rear: This system helps prevent collisions by automatically applying the brakes if the driver doesn't respond in time.
  • Lane-Keep Assist: Assists the driver in maintaining the vehicle within its lane by providing corrective steering inputs if the vehicle starts to drift out of its lane without the turn signal being activated.
  • Adaptive Cruise Control: Automatically adjusts the vehicle's speed to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead. It can slow down or speed up based on the flow of traffic.
  • Blind-Spot Monitoring: Alerts the driver to vehicles in their blind spots, usually through visual or auditory signals, to help prevent potential side collisions.
  • Front and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert with Braking: Warns the driver of oncoming traffic when backing out of a parking space or driveway. If the driver doesn't respond, the system can automatically apply the brakes to prevent a collision.
  • Door Exit Warning: Alerts the driver when they are trying to open the door, and there's oncoming traffic or cyclists, helping to prevent potential accidents.
  • Traffic Sign Recognition: Uses cameras to detect and display traffic signs, ensuring the driver is aware of the current speed limit and other important road signs.
  • Automatic High Beams: Automatically switches between high and low beams based on the presence of other vehicles, ensuring optimal visibility without blinding other drivers.
  • Nine Airbags: Provides enhanced protection to occupants in the event of a collision. This includes front-center and rear-side airbags, in addition to the more common front, side, and curtain airbags.
