It seems Australia’s best-selling electric car is about to score another variant, with the Tesla Model Y L securing government approval for local sale.

This does not automatically mean the vehicle will be released, but there is plenty of precedent that suggests the extended wheelbase mid-size SUV will soon be available in Australia.

The 150mm wheelbase stretch allows the Model Y to accommodate a third row of seats and is the major contributor to the L’s 177mm increase in length over the standard car.

While a third row is added, the Model Y L uses a 2+2+2 arrangement, dialing up the luxury with a pair of second-row captain’s chairs with heating, ventilation and power adjustment. The third-row seats are heated and an upgraded 18-speaker stereo is also fitted.

A specification change in January 2026 also upgraded all Model Ys to the larger 16.0-inch infotainment screen found in the flagship Performance and changed the headlining from light grey to black.

Mechanically, the L mirrors the Model Y Long Range. Tesla is coy on its exact battery and motor specs, but it’s believed the nickel-manganese-cobalt battery pack is about 84kWh and the dual-motor drivetrain is listed in official documentation as producing 378kW.

Thanks to the slightly slipperier profile of the longer body, maximum range actually increases from a WLTP claim of 629km for the Long Range to 681km for the L.  

This would give it the second-longest driving range of any Tesla, after the Model 3 Long Range RWD, which offers 750km.

Given its arrival is yet to be confirmed pricing is also unknown, but it would presumably slot in between the $68,900 (+ORCs) Model Y Long Range AWD and $89,400 (+ORCs) Model Y Performance AWD.
