A new 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine has been added to the Mazda BT-50 ute lineup, sharing its engine with the Isuzu D-MAX ute and MU-X SUV.

The RZ4F-TC engine replaces the 1.9 litre unit used in both the BT-50 and Isuzu’s offerings, and produces 120kW and 400Nm – a 10kW and 50Nm increase over its predecessor – paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Towing capacity has also increased by 500kg over the previous engine, now boasting up to 3.5 tonnes of braked towing capacity

Featured in the entry-level XS trim level, below the 3.0-litre four-cylinder variants, the 2.2-litre diesel will be available for the 4x2 Single Cab Chassis – as the outgoing engine was – but will now also be available for the 4x4 Dual Cab Chassis, and 4x2 and 4x4 Dual Cab Pickup variants of the BT-50.

With the new engine choice, the entry-level BT-50 has seen a $1,500 price increase before on-road costs, now starting from $37,900 for the Single Cab Chassis, rising to $46,710 for the 4x2 Dual Cab Pickup, $53,120 for the 4x4 Dual Cab Chassis, and $54,720 for the Dual Cab Pickup 4x4.

Further changes have also arrived for the rest of the BT-50 range. The 3.0-litre power units will also receive an Idle stop system. XTR and GT 4x4 Dual Cab Chassis variants now also receive a towbar as standard.

The updated BT-50 range is set to go on sale in October.
