I Drove GWM’s New 3.0-Litre Diesel – Ford and Toyota Should Pay Attention
We drive GWM’s new 3.0-litre turbo-diesel in the Cannon Alpha, comparing its 170kW/620Nm outputs, refinement and claimed efficiency against key ute rivals.
GWM is taking a direct swing at Australia’s diesel ute heavyweights with an all-new 3.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel, and after driving it in the updated Cannon Alpha, the established players should be paying attention.
Set to arrive in Australia from September 2026, the new GW4F30 3.0-litre turbo-diesel produces 170kW and 620Nm, with its full torque output available from just 1400rpm through to 2400rpm.
That immediately puts it among the strongest diesel engines in the ute segment.
The Ford Ranger 3.0-litre V6 still has the advantage for outright power, but the Cannon Alpha produces more torque than the Ranger, Toyota HiLux 2.8-litre and Isuzu D-Max 3.0-litre.
Perhaps more impressive is GWM's claimed combined fuel consumption of 7.3L/100km, despite the engine's capacity and outputs.
How the GWM Cannon Alpha 3.0TD compares
GWM’s own benchmarking positions the new Cannon Alpha 3.0TD directly against the Ford Ranger 3.0-litre V6, Toyota HiLux 2.8-litre and Isuzu D-Max 3.0-litre.
On those figures, the Ranger V6 remains the most powerful of the group, while the Cannon Alpha 3.0TD has the highest torque output and the lowest claimed combined fuel consumption figure.
Rather than simply increasing boost or updating an existing engine, GWM says the 3.0TD is a new-generation powertrain developed around improved response, thermal management, torque delivery and efficiency.

The result, at least from behind the wheel, is an engine that feels more sophisticated than its spec sheet might suggest.
I previously drove an earlier development version of this powertrain around six months ago.
At the time, my main criticism was that while it felt effortless at lower speeds, acceleration above roughly 80km/h felt underwhelming compared with engines like Toyota's 2.8-litre diesel or Ford's 3.0-litre V6.
That has changed significantly.
In the production-intent Cannon Alpha I drove, the engine felt noticeably more responsive at higher speeds.
Put your foot down and there is still some initial turbo lag, but once it gets moving, acceleration is strong and remarkably effortless.
It doesn't necessarily *feel* like an engine producing 620Nm in the traditional sense.
There isn't a huge, sudden hit of torque that throws you back into the seat.
Instead, the power delivery is extremely linear.
Climbing hills or accelerating at highway speeds, it simply keeps pulling without feeling strained.
That arguably suits a touring and towing-focused diesel better than an aggressively calibrated throttle response would.
The refinement was an even bigger surprise.
For a large four-cylinder diesel, the new engine is impressively quiet and smooth.
There is very little of the vibration or harshness that can make four-cylinder diesels feel agricultural, and in normal driving it gets surprisingly close to the relaxed character traditionally associated with six-cylinder diesels.
The nine-speed automatic also works well with it.
Gear changes during our drive were quick but smooth, and the transmission generally keeps the engine around the strongest section of its torque curve without constantly hunting through gears.
Even after plenty of hard acceleration, higher-speed testing and off-road driving, the Cannon Alpha's trip computer was showing 10.2L/100km during my drive.
That's obviously not a controlled fuel-consumption test, but considering how the vehicle was being driven, it was an encouraging result.
What’s special about the GWM 3.0L engine?
- New 3.0-litre four-cylinder architecture: the unusually large displacement for a four-cylinder diesel allows GWM to produce 620Nm without relying solely on extreme boost or a small-capacity engine working particularly hard.
- Water-cooled intercooler: lowers the temperature of the intake air, which GWM says improves engine performance and helps maintain consistency under higher loads and in hot conditions.
- Shorter intake piping: reduces the distance air needs to travel through the intake system, with GWM claiming reduced lag and improved throttle response.
- Latest-generation Bosch common-rail injection: provides more precise fuel delivery, helping GWM chase both performance and efficiency.
- Electronically controlled viscous cooling fan: designed to improve thermal management by controlling engine cooling according to demand rather than unnecessarily drawing power continuously.
- Timing chain rather than a belt: GWM has opted for a chain-driven timing system, avoiding the wet-belt arrangement used by some rival diesel engines.
- Broad low-RPM torque delivery: peak torque is sustained between 1400rpm and 2400rpm, with GWM specifically targeting stronger real-world response and towing performance.
- No AdBlue requirement: the Australian Cannon Alpha specification does not use AdBlue despite the new diesel's emissions requirements.
- Recalibrated nine-speed automatic: while not part of the engine itself, the transmission and powertrain calibration have been developed alongside the new diesel to make better use of its low-RPM torque. GWM's Australian development program specifically included engine and transmission calibration.
GWM has also put considerable work into Australianising the updated Cannon Alpha.
The company says the local development program included around six months and 40,000km of testing, while engineers worked on suspension, steering, powertrain calibration, towing behaviour and the vehicle's driver-assistance systems.
That work is immediately noticeable.
The previous diesel Cannon Alpha's ride was one of its biggest weaknesses, particularly with no weight in the tray.
The updated vehicle remains leaf-sprung at the rear, but the locally developed AT-1 suspension tune is substantially better controlled.
The steering also feels more naturally weighted, while the adaptive cruise control and lane-centring systems have been recalibrated to be less intrusive.
Combined with the new engine, it makes the Cannon Alpha feel considerably more resolved than the vehicle I drove just months earlier.
There is, however, one significant compromise.
Unlike some versions of the Ford Ranger, the 3.0TD Cannon Alpha does not offer a permanent or full-time four-wheel-drive mode for use on sealed roads.
In normal road driving it operates as a rear-wheel-drive vehicle, with 4H reserved for appropriate low-traction surfaces.
For buyers regularly travelling on wet or slippery sealed roads, that is something worth considering.
The flip side is serious mechanical off-road hardware, including front and rear locking differentials and a low-range transfer case, along with an 800mm claimed wading depth and 3500kg braked towing capacity.
Then there is the price.
GWM says the 3.0TD Cannon Alpha range will start at less than $60,000.
Its own benchmark puts comparable high-spec versions of the Ranger, HiLux and D-Max significantly higher.
And that might ultimately be the biggest headache for GWM's established competitors.
It is one thing to undercut a Ranger or HiLux while offering an engine that feels noticeably inferior.
It is another to offer 620Nm, 3500kg towing, strong claimed fuel economy, extensive off-road hardware and a genuinely refined powertrain while still charging considerably less.
There is one major question that no launch drive can answer: reliability.
Toyota, Ford and Isuzu have built their diesel reputations over decades and millions of kilometres.
GWM's new engine does not yet have that history behind it, and buyers planning to tow caravans around Australia for the next decade will understandably take that into consideration.
But purely judged on what I experienced behind the wheel, this is not an engine that deserves to be dismissed simply because it comes from a Chinese manufacturer.
The new GWM 3.0TD is powerful, impressively refined, seemingly efficient and dramatically better resolved than the development version I drove only months ago.
Toyota, Ford and Isuzu aren't suddenly obsolete.
But they now have another genuinely serious diesel competitor to worry about.
