BYD has been growing at a rapid pace in Australia, with over 50,000 cars sold in 2025.
Earlier this year, it launched its first fully electric people mover under the Denza sub-brand, called the D9.

Now, spyshots of what appears to be the company’s second people mover have emerged in Australia, with multiple BYD people movers spotted on the back of a car transporter truck in Melbourne.

Pictures taken by ‘leaningtowardsEV’ on the BYD Atto 2 Australia Owners Facebook group show up to three M9 MPVs, which were originally launched just over a year ago in China as the BYD Xia.

These appear to be heading for local evaluation and testing, as we have yet to see this model approved for sale in the ROVER system.

The M9 MPV comes standard with a PHEV powertrain, and in China starts at the equivalent of just over $42,000 AUD.
The top variant comes in at just shy of $55,000 AUD, making it far more affordable than the more luxurious D9 electric MPV.

The top-spec variant of the M9 MPV comes with up to 218 km of CLTC range from its larger 36.6 kWh Blade battery and a combined range of 1,163 km.

Fuel consumption with this setup in hybrid mode has been rated at around 5L/100 km, but of course, that needs to be rated for our local roads.

In China, the top-spec variant also comes with some pretty lux features, including massage seats, a drinks fridge, ambient lighting, LiDAR, 26-inch heads-up display, 28 speakers and much more.

These features come close to what’s offered in the more luxury-focused D9 people mover but without the same luxury price tag.

In terms of size, the M9 comes in at 5.15 metres long and 1.97 metres wide, with a wheelbase of just over 3 metres.

For comparison, that’s around 100 mm shorter than the already available Denza D9 MPV, which starts at $85,990 before on-road costs for the fully electric people mover.

Boot space also appears to be quite good with 470 litres available, which can be expanded to over 2,000 litres with the rear seats down.

Speaking of the seating, the M9 packs a 2+2+3 configuration, similar to that seen on other luxury people movers.

This model has not seen as much coverage as the company’s other models, like the 7-seater SUV, the Sealion 8, which has seen a good start to its sales since deliveries began earlier this year.

More details around the potential local launch, pricing and specs will be available in due course.
For now, though, we are excited to see a solid rival to the Kia Carnival land locally, and if priced under $65,000, it could do quite well.

Stay tuned as we keep you up to date with all the latest BYD news!
