BMW Australia has confirmed the addition of the X3 40d xDrive diesel variant to its fourth-generation X3 range. Local deliveries are scheduled to begin in late Q3 of 2025.

The new model joins the existing line-up comprising two petrol variants and one plug-in hybrid. It is powered by a 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder diesel engine paired with a 48-volt mild hybrid system.

The engine produces 210kW and 670Nm, which represents a 15kW and 50Nm increase over the previous X3 xDrive30d. BMW claims a 0-100km/h time of 5.4 seconds for the new variant, 0.4 seconds faster than the outgoing model.

Priced from $108,900 before on-road costs, the X3 40d xDrive features the M Sport Package and standard equipment comparable to the X3 30e xDrive. This includes 20-inch M light alloy wheels, adaptive suspension, and a 14.9-inch infotainment display running BMW’s Operating System 9.

Other standard features include adaptive LED headlights, three-zone climate control, wireless smartphone integration, and the Driving Assistant Professional package. A comfort package is also included, with items such as ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and manual rear sun blinds.

The addition of the diesel variant follows a continued trend of BMW offering mild-hybrid powertrains across its range. Emissions and fuel consumption figures for the new model are yet to be confirmed under ADR 81/02 testing protocols.

The current BMW X3 line-up in Australia starts at $86,100 for the 20 xDrive and tops out at $128,900 for the M50 xDrive. All variants include BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system and an eight-speed Steptronic transmission.
