Nissan Cuts U.S. Production Amid Challenges, But X-Trail Continues Strong in Australia

Nissan has announced significant production cuts for two key models in the U.S. market—the Rogue (known as the X-Trail in Australia) and the Frontier pickup. This decision comes as part of the automaker’s strategy to manage excess inventory, which has plagued their U.S. operations according to AutoNews.

The cuts, set for September and October 2024, will result in up to 40,000 fewer vehicles being produced. These reductions affect U.S. production facilities, meaning Australian supply from Nissan's Japan factory will not be directly impacted.

In the U.S., the Rogue has been a crucial model for Nissan, representing 31% of its sales in the first half of 2024. However, the need to balance inventory has forced Nissan to reduce output at its Smyrna, Tennessee plant, where the Rogue is produced.

The production line for the Rogue will drop from five days per week to four through October, reflecting the broader issue of oversupply that Nissan has faced in recent months.

This move is notable because, in Australia, the X-Trail continues to perform solidly, showing strong August 2024 sales figures and a new N-Trek model. According to the latest data, 1,201 X-Trails were sold in August 2024, making up 5.7% of the medium SUV market under $60,000.

Year-to-date, the X-Trail has registered 11,878 sales, representing 7.8% of the market, up 57.0% compared to the same period in 2023. This stands in stark contrast to the U.S., where Nissan has struggled with excess supply and decreasing demand, especially for the Rogue.

While the U.S. production cut will help Nissan manage its inventory, Australian sales remain relatively unaffected for now, as local supply is sourced from Nissan's Japanese production facilities. The strong demand for the X-Trail in Australia, particularly in August, suggests that Nissan’s market strategy is paying off locally, even as it faces challenges in other regions.
