The 2025 Isuzu D-Max and its SUV version, the MU-X, are reported to receive a significant update in the form of a new 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine equipped with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, according to a headlightmag report. This development represents a technological advancement in Isuzu's product line.

Originating from the 1.9-litre turbo-diesel engine introduced to the Australian market in 2022, the new 2.2-litre engine is an evolution of this design. It is engineered to offer reduced turbo lag and enhanced performance in specific driving conditions such as hill ascents and overtaking maneuvers. This update comes as other manufacturers in the segment, like Toyota and Ford, are also incorporating hybrid technologies in their models.

The specific role of the 2.2-litre engine within Isuzu's lineup remains uncertain. The current D-Max range features a 1.9-litre engine with 110kW and 350Nm output and a 3.0-litre engine that produces 140kW and 450Nm. It is not yet clear if this new engine will replace one of the existing engines or be an additional choice for consumers.

In a recent update in Thailand, the D-Max received various changes including new front-end styling, updated headlight designs, and improvements in interior features such as infotainment systems and digital displays. These updates are a part of Isuzu's ongoing product enhancements.

In the Australian market, the D-Max competes with models like the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux, with the latter planning to release a 48V mild-hybrid version of its 2.8-litre engine. These developments indicate a growing trend towards incorporating hybrid technology in the utility vehicle segment for enhanced performance and efficiency.

As the automotive industry continues to evolve, the introduction of the 2.2-litre mild-hybrid diesel engine in the Isuzu D-Max reflects the ongoing shifts towards more electrified powertrain options in the market.
