BMW has announced the release of its redesigned X2 and iX2 compact SUV coupes, gearing up for a launch in Australia next year.
Set for a worldwide rollout from March 2024, the new BMW X2 lineup is spearheaded by the electric iX2 xDrive30 and the X2 M35i xDrive, flanked by the base sDrive20i petrol model and the sDrive18d diesel. The exact variants for the Australian market remain undetermined.
The brand has also disclosed plans to introduce an additional iX2 variant by mid-2024, complemented by another diesel variant. Both the X2 and iX2 models will be manufactured on a unified production line at the BMW Group Plant Regensburg, which will also produce the iX2's high-voltage batteries.
The redesigned X2 exhibits design influences from BMW's larger X4 and X6 SUV coupes, or what the company refers to as Sports Activity Coupes (SAC). With significant increases in dimensions, the new X2 is 4554mm long, 1845mm wide, and 1590mm tall. For increased comfort, the wheelbase and track width have been expanded, boasting a luggage capacity between 560L-1470L for the X2 and 525L-1400L for the iX2.
Aesthetically, the X2 debuts an almost hexagonal kidney grille, optionally available with the BMW Iconic Glow contour lighting. Standard LED headlights can be upgraded to adaptive LEDs with Matrix high-beam capabilities. The models showcase a more coupe-like profile with a distinctive rear-end design, enhanced rear wheel arches, and a unique rear lighting signature.
Exclusive to the M35i xDrive variant are the quad-tipped exhaust and the optional M Sport Package Pro, which introduces blacked-out elements and an M Sport brake system. Buyers will have a choice of thirteen exterior finishes, including the newly-introduced Fire Red metallic.
Internally, the BMW X2 mirrors the design elements of the X1 compact SUV, boasting a modern cockpit that integrates the BMW Curved Display with the Operating System 9. Additional amenities include a wireless charging tray, Veganza upholstery options, and enhanced seating functionalities. Safety enhancements comprise an inter-seat airbag for increased passenger protection.
BMW’s standard offerings for the X2 and iX2 include a dual-zone climate system, BMW Maps, sport leather steering wheel, power tailgate, and multiple USB-C ports. Additional options for European models have also been outlined, such as a panoramic glass sunroof and an electronically operated trailer hitch.
The X2 lineup will be expanded with the introduction of the all-electric iX2 model. This new addition, available initially as the dual-motor xDrive30, will feature a 64.8kWh lithium-ion battery, delivering a WLTP driving range between 417-449km.
The X2 M35i xDrive will serve as the high-performance petrol variant, powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, reaching up to 233kW in certain markets.
Base models of the BMW X2 will be equipped with either a three-cylinder petrol engine or a four-cylinder turbo-diesel, dependent on the market. All combustion models employ a seven-speed dual-clutch Steptronic transmission.
On the technological front, the new X2 series has undergone significant upgrades. Standard features encompass advanced collision warning systems, cruise control, lane departure warnings, and parking aids. An array of optional features includes a semi-autonomous driving mode, adaptive cruise control, head-up display, and surround-view cameras. Over-the-air software updates and the Android-based BMW Operating System 9 further enhance the driving experience.
