GWM V8 Supercar and Tank 700 V8 Revealed: Ferrari-Benchmarked Performance Sub-Brand Detailed
GWM reveals GWM GF performance brand: a Ferrari-benchmarked V8 supercar led by ex-McLaren engineer, and Tank 700 V8 confirmed.
Great Wall Motor (GWM) has announced a high-performance global expansion under the new “GWM GF” performance brand at the 2026 Beijing International Auto Show.
Speaking to CarSauce at the 2026 Beijing International Auto Show, Chairman Jack Wei confirmed the company is developing a V8-powered supercar.
“The supercar project is benchmarking Ferrari,” Mr Wei said.
The project is currently scheduled for a public reveal around 2027.
Mr Wei stated that “this V8 strategy is not aligned with current trends in China, but is designed for global markets”.
GWM has appointed former McLaren GT Chief Engineer Adam Thomson to oversee the platform and vehicle development.
“I joined GWM to help develop new platforms and vehicle integration,” Mr Thomson said.
GWM Chief Technology Officer Nicole Wu indicated that the decision to maintain high-capacity engines was at least partly influenced by Australian consumer feedback.
“Australia, for example, last year I spoke with local people, and they told me there is no replacement for displacement,” Ms Wu said.
“So we have V8, we have V6, we have diesel, and we also have diesel hybrid,” she stated.
The V8 rollout will also include the brand’s premium off-road range.
“The Tank 700 will also receive a V8, although it will be a different engine to the supercar,” Mr Wei said.
“This is completely opposite to the current environment/trend in China, it does not fit the Chinese environment. We developed this V8 to meet the needs of more global users,” he explained.
In Australia, we are also trending away from high-displacement performance power plants due to emmissions legislation, though there is still a high demand for them.
GWM expects these high-capacity powerplants to incorporate electrification to meet international standards.
“In the future, high-capacity engines will likely include hybrid systems to meet CO2 emissions requirements,” the company stated.
GWM also intends to use the supercar platform to enter global motorsport categories.
“The supercar platform will evolve into a GT3 race car, with a road-going GT3 version as well,” Mr Wei said.
