Chery Australia has confirmed preliminary specifications for the Stockman diesel plug-in hybrid ute, including a claimed 350kW and 800Nm combined output.

In a follow-up announcement, the brand has also confirmed the Stockman will launch in the fourth quarter of 2026, and revealed that a petrol plug-in hybrid variant will join the range in 2027.

The dual-cab ute is due in Australia in the fourth quarter of 2026 and will pair a 2.5-litre turbo-diesel engine with an electric motor under Chery’s 2.5T diesel Super Hybrid branding.

The headline figures include 4WD, up to 100km of electric-only driving on the NEDC cycle, 2.0L/100km combined fuel consumption and a 3500kg braked towing capacity.

Chery says the petrol plug-in hybrid variant will arrive in 2027, giving the Stockman two powertrain options and positioning the range directly against the petrol-based PHEV utes already on sale.

Chief Operating Officer Lucas Harris said offering "both Petrol and Diesel Plug-in Hybrid options allows us to cater for customer demands, be it off-road performance or a more urban focus."

Chery previously confirmed the local Stockman name after an Australian public vote, positioning the ute as the brand’s first local pick-up and Australia’s first diesel plug-in hybrid ute for this segment.

Key figures remain unconfirmed, including price, payload, battery capacity in kWh and full model-grade details.

Preliminary Chery Stockman specifications

Chery lists the Stockman at 5450mm long, 2010mm wide and 1890mm tall, with a 3250mm wheelbase.

The cargo box measures 1560mm long, 1560mm wide and 500mm high.

Ground clearance is listed at at least 247mm at full load.

Suspension is double wishbone at the front and leaf spring at the rear, while all-terrain tyres will be standard.

Off-road hardware is set to include individually selectable front, centre and rear differential locks, crawl control and tight-turn assist.

Chery says the diesel hybrid system is around 10 per cent more efficient and produces around 30 per cent less vibration than a conventional diesel.

Those claims, along with the driving range and fuel-use figures, are indicative and remain subject to testing and certification.

The 100km EV range figure is listed on the older NEDC test cycle, so it is not directly comparable with WLTP or ADR results.

The Stockman’s preliminary 800Nm figure would place it above the main plug-in hybrid ute rivals already confirmed for Australia, if the number carries through to local certification.

The 2026 BYD Shark 6 Performance produces 350kW and 700Nm, has a 29.58kWh battery, can tow up to 3500kg braked and is priced from $62,900 before on-road costs.

The 2026 GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV produces 300kW and 750Nm, uses a 37.1kWh battery, offers up to 115km of NEDC electric range, can tow up to 3500kg braked and is priced from $59,990 before on-road costs.

The 2026 Ford Ranger PHEV produces 207kW and 697Nm, has an 11.8kWh battery, offers 49km of electric driving, can tow up to 3500kg braked and is priced from $59,000 to $70,000 drive-away.

A comparison table highlights where Chery’s early figures sit against those rivals, although the Stockman’s missing price, battery and payload figures mean the value equation cannot yet be fully assessed.

Inside, the Stockman is set to offer suede trim across the dashboard, doors and roof lining, leather seats, heated and ventilated front seats, a flat rear floor, wireless phone charging, dual-zone climate control and a premium sound system.

Chery says the Stockman will also receive locally tuned driver assistance systems and suspension calibrated for Australian conditions.

Harris said the technology was built around how Australians actually use utes:

"Ute buyers expect a vehicle that can work hard during the week, tackle weekend adventures and deliver strong value," he said, adding that the Super Hybrid system was designed to combine "electric driving capability with the power, towing and off-road performance customers demand."

Ownership coverage is planned to include a seven-year, unlimited-kilometre vehicle warranty, seven years of capped-price servicing, up to seven years of roadside assistance and an eight-year, unlimited-kilometre battery warranty.

Final Australian specifications, payload, battery size, certification figures, model grades and pricing are still to be locked in before the Stockman goes on sale in Q4 2026, ahead of the petrol variant's arrival the following year.
