The 2026 BYD M9 has been confirmed for Australia, giving BYD its first local entrant in the people-mover segment.

The large people mover is due in Australian showrooms during the fourth quarter of 2026 and will be sold only with BYD's Dual Mode DM-i 5.0 Super Hybrid powertrain.

The system combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor, while the top-spec M9 Premium is claimed to deliver up to 145km of WLTP electric driving range and up to 850km of combined WLTP range.

The M9 also continues BYD's push beyond battery-electric models, following electrified models such as the Seal 6 Touring.

BYD Australia will initially launch the M9 in seven-seat Premium form, with an eight-seat Dynamic variant to follow.

Both versions will be front-wheel drive only.

The Premium uses a 36.60kWh BYD Blade Battery, while the Dynamic is fitted with a 20.39kWh Blade Battery.

Both grades support AC charging, DC charging and Vehicle-to-Load functionality.

The M9 measures 5145mm long, 1970mm wide and 1805mm tall, with a 3045mm wheelbase.

BYD lists luggage capacity at 470 litres with all seats in place, while braked towing capacity is rated at 1500kg.

Premium variants feature heated and ventilated front seats, while the second-row captain's chairs offer heating, ventilation and a near zero-gravity seating position.

Safety equipment includes up to nine airbags, a 360-degree camera system, five millimetre-wave radars, eight ultrasonic sensors and a suite of advanced driver assistance systems.

BYD says 73 per cent of the M9 vehicle structure is made from high-strength steel.

BYD Australia Chief Operating Officer Stephen Collins said the M9 would broaden the brand's local range.

"The BYD M9 will be well suited for Australians needing space and practicality while also expecting efficient performance with BYD’s advanced DM Super Hybrid powertrain technology," Collins said.

"The M9 offers superb EV-only driving for daily commutes and exceptional touring range for longer trips.
It is perfectly suited for Australian families as well as fleets seeking low operating costs."

Final Australian pricing and full equipment details will be confirmed closer to the M9's local launch in late 2026.
