Spain has begun a trial of 150km/h speed limits along sections of a highway in Catalonia.

According to website The Local, the Spanish Government has begun testing the 150km/h speed limit with the help of artificial intelligence (AI).

While Spain has a national speed limit of 120km/h, the trial will allow AI technology to increase certain sections of the AP-7 motorway near El Vendrell to 150km/h if safe conditions are met.

Studies from the Netherlands show intelligent speed controls can reduce road accidents in black spots by as much as 30 per cent.

While Germany is known for having unlimited sections of its autobahns, the Northern Territory Government axed open speed limits along sections of the highway almost a decade ago – with drivers now limited to 130km/h.

For the rest of Australia, state limits of 110km/h are enforced – even for freeways designed for higher-speed traffic.

Some groups have been lobbying the Victorian and New South Wales governments to increase the limit along the Hume Freeway – which connects Melbourne to Sydney – to 130km/h, arguing the higher speeds would reduce driver fatigue and accidents.

While most European countries have freeway speed limits of 120 to 130km/h, many limit speeds to 110km/h when driving in rain or adverse weather conditions.
