EXCLUSIVE

The 2026 Polestar 5 electric sportscar has been caught on camera testing on Melbourne roads.

Polestar appears to have brought the 5 to Australia for hot-weather testing during the summer months, ahead of its global launch in the second half of 2025.

The Polestar 5 is set to take on the likes of the Porsche Taycan Turbo and Lotus Emeya R – with the electric four-door ‘grand tourer’ designed to be able to cover long distances in comfort, while offering blistering performance.

Final specifications have yet to be announced by the brand – which started life as Volvo’s performance arm, before being spun off as a stand-alone electric manufacturer – however, Polestar says the 5 will produce up to 650kW and 900Nm.

Likely to be fitted with dual motors – one of which Polestar claims will be “one of the most powerful electric motors on the market” – providing all-wheel-drive traction, and potentially helping to deliver a 0-100km/h sprint time under three seconds.

Meanwhile, the Porsche Taycan Turbo produces 650kW and 890Nm with launch control, allowing for a claimed 0-100km/h time of 2.7 seconds.

Similarly, the electric Lotus Emeya R sedan has claimed outputs of 675kW and 985Nm, for a claimed 0-100km/h time of 2.78 seconds.

All three use an 800-volt electrical system, but while the Porsche has a claimed driving range of 626 kilometres (based on the ECE test), both the Lotus and Polestar estimate the range of their models to be approximately 485 kilometres.

Based on the Polestar Precept concept shown in 2020, the Polestar 5 is expected to headline the company’s current line-up – which includes the Polestar 2 sedan, the Polestar 3 SUV, and the Polestar 4 coupe-SUV.
