The 2026 Toyota BZ4X Touring is set to join company’s line-up from early next year, offering more space than the standard BZ4X.

Toyota says the body of the BZ4X Touring has been lengthened behind the rear axle by 140mm, greatly improving the electric SUV’s luggage capacity.

The rear end of the Touring is also more upright than the standard BZ4X, allowing owners to fit more in vertically.

The Japanese car giant hasn’t said what the luggage capacity is, but claim the changes have increased boot space by approximately 30 per cent – equalling an estimated 533 litres, compared to the 410L in the current version.

The BZ4X Touring also benefits from increased performance, with the variant sold exclusively with a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive powertrain, producing 280kW – a big step up from the current BZ4X AWD’s 160kW output.

The electric vehicle also has a slightly larger battery, at 74.7kWh – though the Touring’s driving range has yet to be announced at this stage.

While the company hasn’t addressed the reason for the changes, it’s possible the increased wheelbase – allowing for a larger battery and more luggage space – is a response to the influx of Chinese electric SUVs entering the market with better driving ranges and cheaper prices.

Toyota has confirmed the standard BZ4X (bottom gallery) will also receive the larger 74.7kWh battery and an increase in performance later this year, with the two-wheel-drive model going from 150kW to 165kW, while the AWD version gets a 92kW bump – to a combined 252kW.

The updated BZ4X is expected to arrive in the fourth quarter (October to December inclusive), ahead of the BZ4X Touring.

It’s not clear whether Subaru will follow up with its own, longer-wheelbase Solterra – a twin to the Toyota BZ4X.

The announcement comes just days after Toyota changed the name of the BZ4X in the US, with the model now known simply as the Toyota BZ in that market.

The move suggests either North America will miss out on other electric models from the company’s electric sub-brand, Beyond Zero – such as the BZ3X – or Toyota is planning to drop its BZ nomenclature for its next wave of electric vehicles.

Local pricing hasn’t been announced yet for the 2026 Toyota BZ4X Touring, but it’s likely the vehicle will demand a premium over the current BZ4X AWD variant – currently on sale for $74,900 before on-road costs.
