Japan has been named as the location for Forza Horizon 6, the latest instalment in the popular racing video game series.

The Forza Horizon franchise – developed by Playground Games and published by Xbox Game Studios – is the road car-focused spinoff of the Forza Motorsport series, centring around the fictional Horizon car festival.

Players can choose from an expansive list of cars from a wide range of manufacturers and compete in events such as races and time trials, complete stunts, collect cars through barn finds, customise vehicles, or simply drive around in an open world environment.

The first instalment in the franchise was released on the Xbox 360 console in 2012, set in Colorado, USA.

Subsequent Horizon games were set in Europe, Australia – which featured locations such as Surfers Paradise, Byron Bay, the Outback, and the Great Ocean Road – the United Kingdom, and Mexico.

For several years, Japan has been a highly requested location among Horizon fans, particularly due to its unique car culture, with those wishes finally realised with its announcement during the Xbox Tokyo Game Show Broadcast.

“From the neon lights and towering buildings of Tokyo City – one of our most detailed and layered environments to date – to the serenity and natural beauty of Japan’s rural and mountain areas, we think players will be blown away by the open world of Japan that we have built.”  said Forza Horizon Art Director, Don Arceta in Xbox’s official news outlet, Xbox Wire.

“While we can’t reveal any specific details quite yet, we will of course be following in the footsteps of Forza Horizon 5 in delivering a broad range of cars that players will know and love. Japan – of course – has a unique car culture all of its own, and we’re excited to have the opportunity to explore that in this game.”

Forza Horizon 6 will initially release on the Xbox Series X and S consoles as well as on PC in 2026, before later releasing on the PlayStation 5.
