The current-generation Volkswagen Touareg has reached the end of the road, with its production set to end in 2026, although a swan song special edition is slated for Australia.

Now in its sixth year on sale in the local market, the third-generation Touareg’s exit marks the end not only for the current model generation, but also the end of the internal combustion-powered version of Volkswagen’s long-running large SUV.

With its end imminent, Volkswagen are releasing the Touareg Final Edition, which brings with it some light aesthetic differentiators.

It has “FINAL EDITION” engraved on the rear door window surrounds, with the words also embossed on the gear level, as well as featuring on the door sill panels and dashboard inlay.

According to a Volkswagen Australia spokesperson, the Touareg Final Edition will be coming to local shores.

“The Touareg Final Edition will arrive in Australia in 2026 as a special edition model,” the spokesperson told CarSauce.

While Australian specifics are yet to be fully confirmed, in Germany, the entire Touareg lineup – which features petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrains – is available as a Final Edition.

In Australia, the Touareg is currently offered with a choice of a 3.0-litre diesel V6 in 170TDI and 210TDI guises or a plug-in hybrid petrol V6 powertrain.

While the days of internal combustion-powered Touaregs are seemingly numbered, the nameplate may live on.

Volkswagen’s internal media releases only mention the end of the current model generation and internal combustion-powered Touaregs, but not the end of the model altogether.

This could hint at an electrified Touareg at some point in the future.

German publication, Automobilwoche, reported in September that an electric ID. Touareg model could be built on Volkswagen’s new SSP platform, with a possible release in 2029.

However, details on any potential replacement for the Volkswagen Touareg are yet to be officially confirmed.
