EV sales in Australia have experienced their strongest quarter on record in Q2 2025, accounting for nearly 13.1 per cent of all new cars sold in Australia according to data from the Australian Automobile Association.

This includes 29,244 battery electric vehicles (BEV) – which by themselves made up 9.31% of new cars sold in Q2 – as well as 11,902 plug-in hybrids (PHEV). This marks a 37 percent increase in EV sales compared to Q2 2024.

Tesla topped BEV sales figures during Q2

BEV and PHEV sales accounted for a total of 41,146 vehicles out of the 314,185 total new cars sold in Australia during the quarter.

New hybrid vehicle sales saw a slight decrease, down 282 cars from Q1 to 46,732 in Q2.

Toyota continue to lead the way in hybrid sales

Despite the record-breaking quarter, Electric Vehicle Council CEO Julie Delvecchio recognises that there are still ways to go in order to achieve Australia’s EV sales targets.

"It’s encouraging to see EV sales climb, but we’re still in the early stages of the transition, and numbers remain well short of what’s needed for a self-sustaining market” Delvecchio said.

“Electric vehicles need to make up at least 30 per cent of all new car sales in Australia before governments can responsibly consider withdrawing incentives or imposing taxes.”

BYD Shark 6 is Australia's best-selling plug-in hybrid ute

Tesla was the leading manufacturer in battery electric sales at the end of Q2 followed by BYD, with Kia rounding off the top 3.

BYD led new PHEV sales figures followed by GWM and Mitsubishi, while Toyota topped hybrids sales ahead of Hyundai and Lexus.

Medium SUVs proved to be the most popular segment among new BEVs and hybrids sold, accounting for nearly 59 per cent and 39.5 per cent of sales respectively.

Four-wheel drive utes accounted for 49.7 per cent of PHEV sales in Q2, followed by medium SUVs at 38.9 per cent.
