The new Chery QQ3 electric hatchback was recently unveiled at the Chengdu Auto Show in China, set to rival the likes of the BYD Dolphin. However, an Australian launch is currently unlikely.

The QQ3 joins Chery’s existing QQ city car lineup, primarily sold in China as well as certain international markets.

Spawned from the QQ concept revealed earlier this year at the Shanghai Auto Show, the QQ3’s unveiling marks the arrival of its third generation, with the original making its debut back in 2003.

Much like the original, the new QQ3 five-door hatch sports rounded styling, with curved edges and oval headlights and taillights.

Inside, the new QQ3 features a two-spoke steering wheel, as well as a 15.6-inch infotainment display – supporting Apple CarPlay, Huawei HiCar and  CarLink – wireless phone charging and 256-colour ambient lighting.

The QQ3 is powered by a rear electric motor – producing 90kW – however, its battery specifications are yet to be confirmed.

However, an Australian arrival for Chery's new hatchback seems unlikely, with the QQ series models effectively ruled out of a local launch for the time being. However, other international models are being considered by the brand.

“There have been a lot of exciting new products revealed in China over the last few weeks,” a Chery spokesperson told CarSauce.

“At this stage there are no plans to introduce Chery’s QQ range to the Australian market. However, there are a number of international models under consideration for the local market.”

While Chery sold hatchbacks during their first stint in the Australian market from 2011 to 2015 – previously offering the J1 and J3 –  no QQ series vehicles were sold locally. Chery’s current Australian range consists solely of SUV models.
