Volkswagen Australia has detailed the pricing and specifications for its expanded plug-in hybrid SUV lineup, confirming the arrival of the Tiguan eHybrid and the all-new Tayron eHybrid for the second quarter of 2026.
The launch marks a significant shift for the German brand locally, introducing a new-generation powertrain capable of triple-digit electric driving range.
While the Tiguan remains a staple of the mid-size segment, the new Tayron effectively replaces the Tiguan Allspace, offering a larger footprint and different value proposition.
Interestingly, the larger Tayron eHybrid enters the market with a lower starting price than its smaller sibling, kicking off from $62,390 before on-road costs.
This aggressive positioning places the new German hybrids in direct competition with established rivals like the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and the wildly popular Toyota RAV4 Hybrid.

Under the bonnet, both models debut Volkswagen’s latest plug-in hybrid system, which pairs a 1.5-litre TSI petrol engine with a single electric motor.
Energy is stored in a 19.7kWh battery, which Volkswagen claims delivers a WLTP electric driving range of between 113km and 117km.
This range figure is substantial for the segment, theoretically allowing many owners to complete daily commuting duties without engaging the petrol engine.
When longer journeys are required, the system operates as a conventional hybrid, with official combined fuel consumption rated at a frugal 1.6 – 1.8L/100km.
Charging has also been upgraded over previous generations, with support for 11kW AC charging and DC fast charging at speeds up to 40kW.

The lineup is divided into two familiar grades: the comfort-focused Elegance and the sportier R-Line.
Elegance models produce a combined system output of 150kW, while the R-Line variants are tuned for a more potent 200kW.
Despite sharing the MQB Evo architecture, the two SUVs serve different practical needs.
The Tiguan eHybrid offers a compact, city-friendly footprint with 490 litres of boot space.
Conversely, the Tayron eHybrid leverages its longer wheelbase to provide a massive 705-litre cargo capacity, though it remains strictly a five-seater in hybrid guise to accommodate the battery hardware.

Inside, the cabins mirror the substantial tech updates seen in the standard petrol ranges. Both models feature a large 15-inch infotainment touchscreen running Volkswagen’s latest software interface.
In a move likely to please traditionalists, the steering wheels have returned to physical buttons, replacing the touch-capacitive controls found on previous models.
Standard equipment lists are extensive, with high-end features like Matrix LED headlights and the ‘DCC Pro’ adaptive chassis control included from the entry grade.
The latter allows drivers to electronically adjust suspension firmness, a feature noted in early reviews for improving ride quality on uneven Australian roads.

Volkswagen Australia’s Head of Product for Passenger Vehicles, Arjun Nidigallu, described the launch as a "milestone," citing the blend of "meaningful electric range" and "everyday usability" as key targets for the new models.
All models are covered by Volkswagen’s standard five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty.
Order books are opening soon, with the first customer deliveries expected in Q2 2026.
