2026 Toyota Land Cruiser 300 Series Hybrid: Exclusive Details Revealed for First Hybrid Land Cruiser Ever, Launching March 2026

Toyota has confirmed the 2026 Land Cruiser 300 Series Hybrid will launch in Australia in March next year, with the brand showcasing a pre-production model at a local preview drive.

The event marked the first time the hybrid Land Cruiser has been driven by Australian media, with key details confirmed ahead of launch.

The Land Cruiser Hybrid will be available exclusively in the Sahara ZX and GR Sport grades, positioned at the top of the range.

Toyota Australia Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations Vice President Sean Hanley said the system is being introduced without sacrificing the Land Cruiser’s defining capabilities.

“The reason we’re launching this car is because there is no compromise on towing rate or performance,” he said.

“It’s not a city boy SUV — it’s a purposeful, fit-for-purpose vehicle.”

At its core, the Land Cruiser Hybrid uses Toyota’s “performance hybrid” system, already seen in the 2025 Toyota Tundra i-FORCE MAX and the Land Cruiser 300 Hybrid currently sold in the Middle East.

It combines a twin-turbocharged 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine producing 290kW and 649Nm with an electric motor generating 36kW and 250Nm, mounted between the engine and a 10-speed automatic transmission.

The hybrid can operate on electric power alone below 30km/h, while at higher speeds the motor supplements the V6 to deliver additional torque for overtaking, off-road driving and towing.

For comparison, the existing 3.3-litre twin-turbo diesel Land Cruiser produces 227kW and 700Nm, paired with a 10-speed automatic and a 3500kg braked towing capacity.

Toyota has confirmed the hybrid will match that 3.5-tonne towing rating and deliver a similar driving range to the diesel, ensuring no compromise on long-distance touring ability.

All Land Cruiser 300 Hybrids will be offered as five-seaters, with the packaging of the hybrid battery and componentry preventing a third row of seats.

This also means there is no under-floor storage available. This limitation is why the system is only available on the Sahara ZX and GR Sport grades, positioned as premium flagship models.

Pricing has not yet been announced but confirmed it will carry a premium over diesel equivalents, though Toyota says it will remain competitive.

Local validation testing is still underway, with Australian-market models expected to differ slightly from those already sold in the Middle East.

Hanley described the new hybrid as a “hero product” for the Land Cruiser range, aimed at customers who expect maximum performance and capability.

He said plug-in hybrid or diesel-hybrid options are not ruled out for the future but stressed that any electrified Land Cruiser must maintain its heavy-duty credentials.

“People aren’t going to stop towing caravans because of NVES,” he said.

“It’s up to us to make sure we’ve got a product for them that works.”

Toyota acknowledged the Land Cruiser Hybrid is likely to attract a penalty under the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard, but said this will be offset by credits from its efficiency-focused hybrids, upcoming plug-in hybrids from 2026, and new battery-electric models.

The Land Cruiser Hybrid is a key part of Toyota’s multi-pathway decarbonisation strategy, which combines hybrids, plug-in hybrids, BEVs, hydrogen and combustion engines depending on application.

With hybrids now accounting for nearly half of Toyota’s Australian sales, the brand says the hybrid Land Cruiser will extend that growth while maintaining the rugged appeal of its most iconic model.
