After a period of internal deliberations over pricing, influenced by market competition from BYD and MG, Hyundai has launched the all-new KONA Electric. The delay was attributed to Hyundai's efforts to competitively position the KONA Electric against the likes of the BYD Atto 3 and MG ZS EV.

The new KONA Electric comes in two powertrain options, 99kW and 150kW 2WD, with prices starting at $54,000. This pricing strategy reflects Hyundai's response to market pressures, with the Standard Range priced at $54,000, down $500 from its 2023 Elite Standard Range counterpart, and the Extended Range at $58,000, showing a $2,500 reduction from the previous Elite Extended Range model.

The Premium Extended Range variant is priced at $68,000, which is a $4,000 increase compared to the previous Highlander Extended Range model.

In comparison, BYD's Atto 3, since its entry into the market, is offered at $48,011 for the Standard Range and $51,011 for the Extended Range, before on-road costs. The Atto 3's 50kWh Standard Range offers a WLTP range of 320 kilometers, while its 60kWh Extended Range version provides up to 420km.

MG has also made competitive moves in the market, recently reducing the price of their MG ZS EV. The new pricing starts at $40,990 for the Excite model, a $2,000 reduction, while the mid-tier Essence is now $43,990, down $1,000. The top-spec Long Range sees the most significant price cut, down $6,000 to $49,990.

The Excite and Essence models come with a 44.5kWh battery offering a 320km range, and the Long Range variant includes a 68kWh battery capable of 440km.

The new KONA Electric distinguishes itself with a range of up to 505km (WLTP) and supports fast charging, capable of reaching 80 percent charge in approximately 45 minutes. It features a horizontal dashboard design with two 12.3-inch digital displays and a Shift by Wire drive selector. Safety features include the Bluelink TM connected car services and the SmartSense TM safety suite.
