In 2024 the Chery Omoda 5, a budget-friendly SUV from China, introduces the GT variant to its lineup marking a significant enhancement in power and features.

This update comes along with a noticeable increase in pricing for the existing models. The GT models, now the premium offerings in the range, feature a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine, a considerable upgrade from the 1.5-liter engine in the BX and EX models. This new engine delivers an impressive 137kW of power and 275Nm of torque, outperforming the BX and EX's output of 108kW and 210Nm.

For those interested in fuel efficiency, the GT model promises lower consumption figures, with the front-wheel-drive version consuming 6.8L/100km, slightly better than the 1.5-liter engine. Alongside these enhancements, the GT models also introduce a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, replacing the continuously variable transmission in the earlier versions. A key structural change in the GT models is the shift from a torsion beam rear suspension to a more sophisticated multi-link setup, offering better handling and stability.

The pricing for the Chery Omoda 5 has been revised, reflecting these upgrades. The front-wheel-drive GT model is now available at $38,990, with its all-wheel-drive counterpart priced at $41,490. This marks a significant increment from the previous pricing of the BX and EX models, which have also seen price hikes of $1500 and $1000, respectively. The BX now stands at $34,490, and the EX at $36,990.

Additional features across the 2024 Chery Omoda 5 lineup include digital radio, an auto-dimming frameless rear-view mirror, and a more potent 50-watt wireless phone charger. The company, however, hasn't clarified whether these features will be standard across all models. The GT models are distinguishable by exclusive GT badges on the tailgate.

Chery Omoda 5's availability in Australian showrooms will commence with the front-wheel-drive models in mid-January, followed by the all-wheel-drive GT in February. For those interested in the 2023 model, Chery Australia has announced a $1500 factory bonus for purchases made before January 31.

2024 Chery Omoda 5 Australian Pricing:

  • Omoda 5 BX 1.5-litre front-wheel drive – $34,490 (up $1500)
  • Omoda 5 EX 1.5-litre front-wheel drive – $36,990 (up $1000)
  • Omoda 5 GT 1.6-litre front-wheel drive – $38,990 (new)
